Throwback to Greenwich Welcome Fair

A Welcome Fair campaign built around community, belonging and student life.

The video featured in this case study was produced during my time at Greenwich Students’ Union (GSU). All rights to the content remain with GSU. It is shared here solely to document my contribution to the project.

The Greenwich Welcome Fair is part of the wider Greenwich programme, organised by GSU every September. It serves as the introductory gateway to the university life that Greenwich offers. The fair is an exciting opportunity for students to explore various societies, sports clubs, and campus services. Students also have the chance to collect freebies.

As part of the wider communications plan for Welcome 2023, GSU wanted to target current, new, and prospective students. The chief purpose was to drive community spirit and establish a loyal relationship between GSU and students, while also boosting membership in societies and sports clubs. Recognising that many students experience anxiety when starting or returning to university, the plan also aimed to address these feelings by encouraging involvement in student clubs.

The main challenge involved managing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). This meant coordinating the representation of hundreds of clubs with diverse backgrounds and interests, and ensuring the reel showcased a visibly broad spectrum of people and student interests.

I used an interview-style technique and filmed various students sharing the society or sport club they are joining, ensuring strong representation from students of diverse backgrounds. The reel featured individuals from a wide range of societies and sports clubs, highlighting the university’s commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). By capturing voices from different cultures, academic interests, and identities, the video demonstrated that every student could find a welcoming space within the Greenwich community. The ‘flashback’ themed Welcome reel aimed to remind students that they can join clubs at any time during the academic year, and that societies offer support not only for shared interests and passions, but also for fostering belonging and easing anxiety for students from all walks of life.

The reel became the most-watched GSU reel during my time at GSU, with nearly 40,000 views. By expanding through the University of Greenwich’s Instagram channel, the company reached an 85% penetration rate among non-followers. This significantly expanded GSU’s digital footprint. The project also received direct appreciation from the University’s Director of Marketing and Communications.
